Albanian Fustanella in the UNESCO

Albanian Fustanella in the UNESCO
The Issue
The Albanian fustanella, an ancient and emblematic Tosk garment of the Albanian people, deserves recognition and preservation as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Worn for centuries across Albania and among Albanian-speaking and Albanian-origin communities beyond its borders, the fustanella has served as a symbol of dignity, identity, and cultural continuity. Its presence is historically documented not only in Albania but also among the Arbëreshë of Italy, the Arvanites of Greece, and the Albanian military and guard units that served in Egypt under the Albanian-origin dynasty of Muhammad Ali.
More than a traditional garment, the fustanella embodies refined craftsmanship, inherited techniques, and a shared memory that links diverse Albanian communities across regions and generations. Recognizing it through UNESCO would safeguard an irreplaceable cultural treasure and honor a living tradition that continues to inspire pride and connect Albanians worldwide.
