Stop the needless destruction of Aberystwyth trees

The Issue

Aberystwyth Town Council is proposing to cut down five semi-mature poplars, including a rare black poplar, together with thirty three Monterey Cypress trees. The trees are situated to the rear of Cambridge Terrace, Queens Road, adjacent to the bowling club, on land leased from the County Council.

There is no adequate justification for felling the trees. There were some concerns that the roots from the trees might damage the drains of nearby building. However, a Town Council commissioned survey failed to confirm this.

These poplars are extremely valuable for a variety of moths and butterflies and for many birds and provide habitat for increasingly rare hedgehogs, which are protected by UK and EC legislation/regulation.

These poplars comprise the ONLY such cluster of semi-mature, wildlife-important broadleaved trees in that big stretch of Aberystwyth between Parc Penglais and Cliff Terrace. The County and Town Councils should be aware of a growing public awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and wildlife, shown recently, for example, by the huge public protests about the much criticised tree-felling in Sheffield.

Retention of the poplars are completely in line with the County Council's published criteria for granting tree-preservation orders in that they are visible from a public place; they have an intrinsic beauty for their contribution to the landscape; they have nature conservation value or have cultural associations; and they face imminent threat of destruction.

The County Council public consultation period was until 21 November but has now been extended to 5th December.  Currently there is only one not very visible notice about the tree feeling on the adjacent footpath. There is also nothing on the Coast and Country website which should show the application to fell. This lack of sufficient public notification at a point already half way through the consultation period must justify a demand for it to be extended.

The public own these trees. We cannot afford to lose them. Please save them.
