Walt Disney Pictures needs to finally commit to National Treasure 3

The Issue

In 2004, Walt Disney Pictures in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Junction Entertainment, Saturn Films, and Buena Vista Pictures released the beloved adventure film, “National Treasure”. Now, fifteen years later, there is a cult following behind the production as well as its sequel, “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets” (2007). Ben Gates, Riley Poole, and Dr. Abigail Chase are all beloved characters whose involvement with treasure-hunting, truth-seeking, and fact-checking antics won the hearts of millions across the globe.

It’s no secret that the Walt Disney Company has steered away from the creation of the third installment of this series. It’s been twelve years since the release of ‘Book of Secrets’ and fifteen years since the release of the original film. Since then there have been countless reports of the possibility of a script, talent contracts, development of the script, studio negotiations, etc…, yet there has never been any evidence of a concrete commitment to this film.

Rumors swirled a few years back with the supposed plot of answering what was on page 47 in the President’s Book of Secrets. This time around however, the treasure would be centered on: The Lost City of Atlantis.

I believe it’s about time that Walt Disney Pictures and the other production and distribution affiliates join the party that is: National Treasure 3. There is sufficient evidence that the film can and will be a massive success. Director Jon Turteltaub has given interviews claiming the reason for a halt in production is due to Disney believing that audiences don’t want to see anymore: “I think they’re wrong. I think they’re right about the movies they’re making; they’re obviously doing a really good job at making great films. I just think this would be one of them, and they don’t quite realize how much the Internet is begging for a third National Treasure.”

Turteltaub is right for so many reasons. 1. The plot and characters are so versatile that there is room for improvement, change, and flexibility. 2. The first film was loved so much that the original audience will come back. 3. There is an opportunity to draw in new audiences because of the time gap in releases. 4. People are literally asking…begging for this to become reality! 5. There is a great opportunity for marketing and Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts expansion. 6. Literally no one has said this is a bad idea except the guys bankrolling this opportunity. 7. It’s what people want.

Help me to bring my childhood back to its former glory! I grew up on National Treasure and there are so many children and teens today that aren’t being surrounded with the wit, knowledge, and heart that are so prevalent in these films. They singlehandedly ignited my passion for American history, literature, art, exploration, screenwriting, film, and journalism. Because of the National Treasure franchise, I have cherished memories and inside jokes with my family, friends, and boyfriend. These films hold such a special place in my heart and I truly believe the world deserves another one.

Like Ben Gates says, "Those who have the ability to take action, have the responsibility to take action."
