Protect a Black rural community from a 638-acre solar farm

Protect a Black rural community from a 638-acre solar farm
The Issue
Archer is a small, majority-Black town southwest of Gainesville in Alachua County, Florida. A recent development plan from Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) has targeted the outpost to build an almost 650-acre solar farm along Southwest County Road 346, which would directly adjoin a historic Black farming community.
GRU does not service Archer residents, so community members will not receive any energy from the new facility. GRU also had the opportunity to place the renewable energy project in its own backyard near a Gainesville-based generating station, but instead is attempting to place it in a rural, working-class Black community outside of Gainesville against affected residents' will.
The decision ultimately lies in the hands of the Alachua County Board of Commissioners. Voting yes to this development proposal will destroy the landscape and property values of Black landowners in Archer for generations to come.
If you believe rural Black communities matter and want to help preserve this historic farming community, please sign this petition. Alachua County residents, hold your elected officials accountable! Email our county commissioners at bocc@alachuacounty.us or call (352) 264-6900 to tell them to vote NO to dumping the GRU solar farm in Archer.
