Alabamians want universal background checks

Alabamians want universal background checks
The Issue
It's time to make laws that make sure guns don't end up in the wrong hands.
In March of last year the US House of Representatives passed HR 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021. This bill is as following:
"This bill establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties (i.e., unlicensed individuals).
Specifically, it prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check.
The prohibition does not apply to certain firearm transfers or exchanges, such as a gift between spouses in good faith." (see https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/8
The bill still needs to pass in the US Senate. Background checks would be just one of many steps needed in a comprehensive approach to what is a crisis in American society. (See more at https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/02/03/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/ and https://www.vox.com/23142734/uvalde-mass-shooting-gun-violence-control )
Seven of the eight representatives in Alabama voted against this background checks bill. But just because our representatives voted against it does not mean we as Alabamians do not want it. This petition will show Senators Richard Shelby and Tommy Tuberville that we as Alabamians do in fact want to do all we can to keep guns from getting in the wrong hands.
This is a bipartisan issue, we do not sign this petition as Republicans or Democrats but as concerned and even desperate members of your state. By signing this petition we don't think this will solve everything, or that we mustn't take other actions as well, through prayer, community development, education, and law enforcement. Senators Shelby and Tuberville, we ask you as Alabamians to do your jobs as law makers and vote this law into existence.
