Alabama State University, founded in 1867, is one of the top producers of Black educators in the State of Alabama. Dr. Cornel West is an American philosopher, political activist, social critic, prominent and provocative democratic intellectual. The grandson of a Baptist minister, Dr. West focuses on the role of race, gender, and class in American society and the means by which people act and react to their "radical conditionedness". Dr. West draws intellectual contributions from multiple traditions, including Christianity, the Black church, Marxism, neopragmatism, and transcendentalism.
