Daviess County Fiscal Court to allow the Confederate memorial in Owensboro, Ky to stay up

The Issue

The memorial to Daviess County Confederate veterans is a lasting reminder to the brave sacrifice that many Americans have made to the cause of freedom. It is also a testament to the history of this county, and the role it played in the bloodiest conflict to take place on this continent. Although some misguided individuals feel offended by its presence, the removal of this statue would only succeed in creating a deeper divide in our community. This has been confirmed in  other communities, such as Charlottesville, where violence between equally hateful and uneducated groups has broken out.

True historians are clear on who the CSA were, and what they were fighting for. For them, it was a war not about slavery, or the fate of black Americans, but the right of independence and self determination. By allowing this statue to remain, we secure a place for these values in American culture for generations to come. We must preserve history, not destroy it. We can do this in our community by keeping this statue where it is.
