Being forced to take indirect flights to Tobago from North America and the Caribbean can get really bothersome as time goes on. Approximately, the travelling public will be in transit anywhere between 3-4 hours longer than a direct flight to the island. Apparently, airlines in the Caribbean don't believe there's enough demand for direct flights to the Capital of Paradise. We Tobagonians think their calculations are wrong and we're trying to prove it with this petition. It is of dire importance that the (A.N.R.) Robinson International Airport be open to the flying public of the Americas. As of December 15th, 2014, Tobago is the ONLY MAJOR CARIBBEAN ISLAND WITHOUT DIRECT SCHEDULED AIR SERVICE TO ANY CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES. What hurts even more is that Tobago plays home to the Caribbeans largest and leading airline, Caribbean Airlines.
Did you know Delta Air Lines launched weekly non-stop service from the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta to Crown Point International Airport, now (A.N.R.) Robinson International, Tobago on Saturday, December 15, 2007? The historic, fully-booked, flight landed seamlessly on the tarmac where travellers were greeted with open arms and Tobagonian hospitality.
Now, we'd like to make it perfectly clear, this is not a plea for daily service to Tobago. We do understand that the airline business is a tricky one and meticulous planning is needed before flights are implemented. All we ask of you is to look into the possibility of weekly direct flights from Tobago to North American Cities. The majority of direct international flights from Tobago are to the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden. It has been announced that both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways will be commencing a twice weekly service to the island in 2015 bring the weekly departures to the United Kingdom from 2 to 4 out of the 7 days in the week. It seems as if the European community has seen the true potential for business on the island of Tobago, now its time for our fellow Islanders and North Americans. Lets #OpenTobagoToTheAmericas.
