Pesticides are integral to farming as it is important for increasing the productivity. Unfortunately, markets are flooded with fake pesticides and according to one estimate this is a thriving market worth Rs 9000 cr. This has serious implications and pose risks for the country. Fake pesticides are inferior formulations and may contain some hiddden chemicals which are not fit for consumption. It is a threat to farmers, humans and environment. Since the trade is done illegally, it also causes losso to state's exchequer. There is a need for a multi-stakeholder awareness and intervention to curb this menace. State governments and central government must take stringent steps to stop this trade.
