I’m overdue for an update. A lot of happened in a short amount of time.
First, I’ve written to a local legislator and received a positive response back that he is going to assist.
I followed up with him earlier this week and I’m waiting for his reply back.
Second, the insurance company FINALLY reversed their decision after denying the MRI, denying the peer-to-peer review, denying the appeal, and denying many follow ups to the denial. As a last ditch effort I replied all to the original email I had sent the CEO and leaders and magically the next day, it was reversed.
while this level of persistence paid off for me and I did receive my MRI, not everyone has the time, resources, and energy for this type of fight. I want to make this a law. A policy change is not enough at just one insurance company.
Finally, third: After, what I thought was, the final denial from insurance company “B”, I frantically went into “make-it-happen” mode. I called local surgeons, oncologists, dermatologists, and just about any hospital or doctors office I could find. I asked about paying out of pocket for the biopsy. Most turned me away and said I needed a referral, pre authorization, and/or MRI results. I literally spoke to one surgeon directly and offered to bring in my own biopsy sample. Yes, I was feeling that desperate and scared. He found that particularly gross and declined (in retrospect, he was right lol). FINALLY, I found an amazing dermatologist who agreed to see me right away. He completed two biopsies without a pre authorization and without an MRI. With my husband there in the office, he said to us both, “I believe you. I see the rash”. What a relief. An absolute treasure of a doctor. Both biopsies were negative for cancer! Days after getting the biopsy results the MRI decision was overturned and I finally received my MRI. The MRI was also negative for cancer.
While this is amazing news and I’m so relieved, I’m still fighting to change the mindset that age and family history should be deciding factors. I want a law in place to protect everyone from having to endure this utterly exhausting, unnecessary, battle with insurance companies.
