President Donald J. Trump's executive order titled "Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States," which bans immigrants and refugees from several Muslim-majority countries, clearly violates the U.S. Constitution and federal statutes.

Michigan's beautifully diverse population strengthens our communities and our economy. This ban not only hurts our state, it violates our shared American values of religious freedom and equality. It violates basic human decency to turn our backs on people, especially children, who are fleeing terror, and it should be condemned. And already, there are Michigan residents whose constitutional rights have been violated by this ban.

We call on Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette to vigorously defend all people in Michigan from this unconstitutional attack by President Trump. Schuette should file a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Michigan residents who have been harmed, and join existing federal lawsuits.
