If you want to know more about the Greys read on:
Who are the Knickerbocker Greys:
- The Knickerbocker Greys – founded in 1881 – is the oldest after-school activity in America. The Greys are open to boys and girls 6-17 from all walks of life, including children from diverse backgrounds and financial needs from all over the city. For the past 142 years, the Greys have served nearly 5,500 of New York City’s children, fostering integrity, confidence, character, civility, social skills, knowledge of history, and leadership.
- The GREYS have had their headquarters in the Armory since 1902. The Greys take up a mere 800 sq ft. in the basement of the Armory -- a building with 200,000 sq ft of space. They are a unique organization and a national treasure. Since Covid, they have been barred from returning to their home. In-person programming in their Armory home in a world marked by transience and ephemeral experience is needed now more than ever.
- Graduates of the Greys have fought and died for the United States in its wars. As you enter the Armory this evening, take a moment to look at the plaques on either side of the entrance doors commemorating the Knickerbocker Greys who died in World Wars I and II.
- A Greys Mother founded the Gold Star program to honor Fallen soldiers and help support their families.
- Graduates of the Greys include NY and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, NY Governor Averell Harriman, Mayor John Lindsay, Arkansas Governor Winthrop Rockefeller, Robert Lovett, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., (developed WWII program that became Navy SEALs), author Louis Auchincloss, and many other accomplished and prominent individuals.
- Thousands of community members and public officials have overwhelmingly supported the Greys in their efforts to remain at the Armory, and have opposed the Conservancy’s efforts to remove them. Greys highlighted in the State Landmark designation of the Armory.
- Community Board Unanimous Resolution (May 25, 2022): “[T]he Conservancy should be denied funding from New York City and New York State if the Greys are not permitted to use the Armory for their headquarters, classes, and events.”
