In the peaceful community of Airdrie, Alberta, a tragic incident unfolded that has left many residents heartbroken and questioning the current practices of wildlife management. A cougar, spotted along Bayside Drive and Luxstone Green, was tranquilized and subsequently killed by the Alberta Fish and Wildlife on a Thursday evening.  Animal rights group The Furbearers condemned the killing, asking for relocation and removing attractants instead.

This majestic creature had not harmed anyone, yet it paid with their life simply for being in an urban area. Understandably, the presence of a wild animal in a residential area raises concerns for public safety. However, the choice to kill should never be made.

Cougars, like all wildlife, are an integral part of Alberta's rich natural heritage. They deserve respect and humane treatment, even when they find themselves in environments awkward for both them and local residents. There must be more compassionate solutions and better prevention tactics, such as improved public awareness, effective animal tracking technologies, and designated wildlife corridors that allow animals to traverse safely away from human habitats.

Moreover, there is a need for comprehensive protocols that prioritize non-lethal management solutions. Wildlife officers must be equipped and trained to employ deterrents and relocation measures - proven methods in various regions worldwide.

By advocating for change and urging the government to develop humane wildlife management policies, we can ensure more such defenseless creatures are given a second chance at life. We owe it to our communities, our environment, and the future generations to protect and live harmoniously with our wildlife.
