More than two dozen dogs were found dead on a property in Mat-Su Borough, Alaska. Investigators counted the bodies, reviewed their footage, and reduced the charges against the woman responsible. Then, two months later, they found another one.

Her name was Zoe. She was not a sled dog. She was Misty Rehder's own personal pet — and she had been left to starve to death in a 300-square-foot cabin that investigators never fully searched. While Rehder's charges were being reduced, Zoe's body was still there, waiting to be found.

Rehder now faces 26 counts of animal cruelty. She is being held on $25,000 bail. But those charges were already cut down once because of investigative failures that a Mat-Su Borough report has since acknowledged — failures in oversight, in thoroughness, in basic accountability. A witness who raised concerns about the case put it plainly: "They're not even doing the bare minimum."

Twenty-seven dogs are dead. One of them was Rehder's own companion, left to die alone. And the charges against the person responsible were reduced because investigators chose to review footage rather than search a one-bedroom cabin.

We are calling on Mat-Su Borough prosecutors to reinstate the full scope of charges against Misty Rehder, file additional charges to account for Zoe's death, and ensure that the investigative failures documented in the borough's own report result in real reforms — not just recommendations.
