ADVOCATING to stay in my CRHC rental apartment with my EMOTIONAL SUPPORT CAT 🐈 STELLA BEL
The Issue
My name is Kimberly Urysz-Valade, and I am a resident of the Capital Regional Housing Corporation (CRHC) in British Columbia. After waiting eight years to secure housing here, I have now lived in this community for seven years. Four years ago, I was overjoyed to find a source of immense support and companionship in my Emotional Support Animal (ESA), Stella Bella. Having her by my side has played a crucial role in helping me manage the challenges posed by my disabilities.
Unfortunately, despite the invaluable support ESAs provide, not all rental properties in British Columbia are required to accommodate them. This presents a significant barrier for individuals like myself who rely on ESAs to improve our quality of life, mental health, and overall well-being. Working alongside the University of Victoria Law Centre, a very caring Lawyer advocating for Persons with Disabilities, the Human Rights Coalition, my extremely important, long term Psychiatrist, and Social Worker from my General Practitioners office support, I have advocated tirelessly for my right to keep Stella Bella in my home.
It is crucial to recognize that Emotional Support Animals are more than just pets; they are lifelines, offering those of us with disabilities a peaceful, supportive presence. Denying access to ESAs in rental properties not only infringes on the rights of individuals with disabilities but also disregards their therapeutic benefits.
There is a growing body of evidence that highlights the positive impact of ESAs. Studies indicate that they help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and contribute significantly to the stability and emotional equilibrium of their owners. Countries like the United States have already recognized the importance of ESAs and have enacted laws to protect individuals requiring their services in housing environments.
I am calling on government officials and policymakers in British Columbia to amend existing rental regulations to ensure all individuals with legitimate ESA needs are accommodated. This includes providing equal opportunities for residents in rental properties to experience the therapeutic benefits of living with an Emotional Support Animal. By modifying these laws, we can ensure greater inclusivity and equality for those with disabilities, allowing them to lead healthier and happier lives.
Please join me in urging the British Columbia government to acknowledge the importance of Emotional Support Animals in rental housing. Your signature can help bring about change that will vastly improve the lives of many, ensuring we can keep our supportive companions by our sides at all times. Sign this petition and support a more inclusive community for everyone.
