The Issue

My son is a bright young student, full of potential and promise, but he faces a daily challenge that many might not understand - he is living with type one diabetes. Like many children, my son is shy about his condition. He prefers to blend in, not wanting to draw attention to himself when his alarms go off. He often just silences them, hesitating to ask for help or for his medical needs to be addressed. This scenario is not unique to our family but is shared by many students and parents across the country.

Currently, the policies in place for managing type one diabetes in schools are outdated and insufficient. In the United States, many regulations prevent school nurses from actively monitoring students' blood sugar levels. This outdated approach not only puts children at risk but also places undue pressure on them to self-manage a serious medical condition during school hours. Schools should be a safe environment where children with type one diabetes receive the necessary support to both learn and manage their health effectively.

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 244,000 children under the age of 20 have been diagnosed with diabetes. Inadequate monitoring can lead to severe health complications, including diabetic ketoacidosis, seizures, and even hospitalizations. It is crucial that we advocate for change in our school systems to protect our children's health and academics.

We propose a policy overhaul that mandates school nurses to monitor and manage the blood sugar levels of type one diabetic students. This change would ensure timely interventions, alleviate the stress on students, and provide peace of mind to parents who worry about their children's safety. With advanced technology and training, such provisions are not only feasible but essential.

Join me in urging the Department of Education and local school districts to implement these much-needed policy updates. Let's work together to create a school environment where students with type one diabetes receive the support they need to thrive without fear or embarrassment.
