We are living in times where our values, beliefs, and rights as citizens of New York state are put under great threat. The policies of the current administration, led by Donald Trump, have endangered the safety and freedom notably of women, immigrants, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA community. Decisions and executive orders passed over the last fortnight along with a brutal proposal for a national abortion ban demonstrate a running counter to the wishes of the people of New York. 

The proposed abortion ban via the Life at Conception Act  is of particular concern. The World Health Organization reports that restrictive abortion laws contribute to higher rates of unsafe abortions, which leads to a drastic increase in maternal mortality than in states with lenient laws. Moreover, New York, infused with a spirit of federalism and economic equity, has been the contributor of more federal taxes than it has received, a fact confirmed by the State Comptroller reports- to the tune of over $48 million.

Additionally, the way this bill and bills like it are written, they often criminalize miscarriage and prevent doctors from intervening in circumstances regarding the health or the life of the mother. This further increases maternal mortality and makes pregnancy potentially a death sentence for people able to become pregnant. This bill is dangerous and it is a Human Rights violation according to Amnesty International. 

The current policies do not represent New Yorkers stance on reproductive choice. New York voted successfully to codify abortion into our State Constitution. It is thereby, time we advocate for our rights and for New York's secession from the United States. This drastic step is crucial to protect our values, rights, and lives.
