Advocate for the Recognition of Winterguard as a Sport by School Boards
The Issue
As a dedicated member of colorguard, I've gained valuable skills and experiences that nurture my leadership abilities. But, to my disappointment, when I wished to become a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), I found out that it's not possible because winterguard is not recognized as a sport in our school system.
Winterguard, a fast-paced physical activity which demands discipline, skill, and teamwork is much more than just a theatre programme. It's a rigorous undertaking in which competitors perform choreographed routines, involving precisely-timed movements, creative expressions and more.
According to Winter Guard International (WGI), more than 40,000 young people participate in winterguard across U.S. each year. It's dismaying that despite such a high level of involvement, our school board has yet to acknowledge winterguard as a varsity sport.
Let's rally to bring change. By acknowledging winterguard as a sport, we uphold the values of equity in our educational institutions and respect the time, effort, and talent that all winterguard participants infuse into their routines. More importantly, it empowers students like myself, who seek to demonstrate our leadership skills in organizations such as the FCA.
Join me in convincing the school board that winterguard should be considered a sport. Your support could redefine how our institution values diversity in sports. Please, sign this petition and let's make a change together.
