Advocate for the Financial Rights of the Disabled
Advocate for the Financial Rights of the Disabled
The Issue
Financial struggles should not compound the daily struggles faced by those with disabilities. My mother and I know this all too well. We are physically disabled to the point where we cannot stand, sit, or walk for long periods; the pain haunts us all day, every day. And due to our condition, we can’t always work full-time, but we strive to contribute however we can.
Unfortunately, our part-time income is counted against us. We are told we can work, but once we earn over a certain threshold, the essential financial assistance we receive is taken away. The current threshold sits at just $2,000, which is woefully insufficient. With apartments commanding rent of $1,200 and up, one does not need to be a mathematics genius to see the wide, untenable gap here.
It is not just about survival; we should also have the means to afford the basic dignities of life - clothing, quality food, a comfortable home setup. This consideration extends to all disabled individuals; our current struggle reflects a widespread issue.
As per a 2018 report from the US Census Bureau, nearly 40 million, or one in eight, Americans are living with a disability. With the current rules in place, a significant portion of our population is perpetually relegated to an unfair life of financial hardship - all due to health problems they didn’t ask for and don't have control over.
We are not asking for a free pass; we just want a fair shot. Adjusting the financial threshold for disabled individuals from the current $2,000 to a range of $3,000 to $33,000 is a small step in the right direction and a huge leap towards equality. This approach would provide a tangible, empathetic and much-needed relief for millions of disabled individuals.
Join us in urging authorities to re-evaluate and adjust the financial thresholds for disabled individuals. Help us in bringing about a constructive change for those striving against adversity. Sign the petition and let's stand up for fairness, equal opportunities, and basic human rights. Your support is crucial.
