Our beloved son Christopher Paul Sims was violently attacked in his apartment and succumbed to his injuries. Despite having emergency contact information listed on his Texas ID, law enforcement assumed his girlfriend was his common-law wife and never contacted us, his parents. This oversight robbed us of the opportunity to oversee his medical care and to be with him during his final moments.

This heartbreaking experience underlines a critical flaw in the current system that many other Texas families may unknowingly face. An amendment to the Texas Real ID Act of 2005, making it mandatory for law enforcement to check the emergency contacts listed on an individual’s Texas ID or driver license during medical emergencies, could prevent similar situations in the future. 

Texas is increasingly experiencing unpredictable and severe weather events that pose significant risks to its citizens, making the need for proactive safety measures more urgent than ever. We are calling for a special Texas legislative session to discuss this amendment and ensure all Texans' safety and peace of mind. Such a measure is not just a bureaucratic adjustment; it is a step towards prioritizing human lives and familial bonds in times of crisis.

Our proposal is straightforward and impactful. It requires law enforcement officers to adhere to a protocol that checks for emergency contact information in a person's official identification during medical emergencies.
