The Issue
LATEST UPDATE
This petition is currently paused as discussions between Everyone Active and the dance staff are being held this week. We are hoping for a satisfactory conclusion. I will update everyone when I know more. Sue
Our community dance classes at Woking Leisure Centres have become more than just an exercise opportunity; they are a vibrant meeting ground for different ages and ethnic groups, fostering social cohesion and enriching our local community. With a diverse range of dance styles offered, these classes have built a strong following and have been instrumental in bringing people together through the shared joy of dance.
However, there is an imminent challenge threatening the essence of these beloved classes. 'Everyone Active,' the new management set to take over Woking Leisure Centres, is proposing a switch to generic in-house music for all dance classes. This change could undermine the choreography that has already been successfully rolled out, attracting numerous dance enthusiasts. It is a change we cannot afford, as it risks alienating the very community these centres aim to serve.
Our dedicated dance instructors are not only willing but eager to continue using their own music, which they have carefully selected to match their teaching styles and choreography. To facilitate this, they are ready to bear the financial responsibility of any necessary licence fees by having them deducted from their salaries.
We urge ‘Everyone Active’ to reconsider this decision and allow our instructors the freedom to use their existing music. This flexibility is vital for maintaining the quality and appeal of our classes, which have already proven successful in creating a unique and inclusive exercise environment.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the preservation of our cherished community dance classes, ensuring that they remain a welcoming space for all, and enabling them to continue thriving under the new management. Please join us in advocating for the music freedom at Woking Leisure Centres.
