The Issue
In Trinidad and Tobago, the LGBTQ community faces significant challenges and discrimination despite the country's commitment to human rights and equality. Being part of the LGBTQ community often means grappling with social stigma, legal opposition, and limited protections under the law. It is time we advocate for stronger rights and protections for LGBTQ individuals to ensure that everyone can live freely and authentically without fear of prejudice or persecution.
According to the 2019 Human Rights Report by the U.S. Department of State, LGBTQ individuals in Trinidad and Tobago face widespread societal discrimination and abuse. This report highlights the need for comprehensive legal reforms and societal change to address these disparities. Despite the presence of anti-discrimination laws, there are no specific legal provisions to protect LGBTQ individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
The government's 2018 commitment to improve human rights standards must explicitly include advancing LGBTQ rights. This includes repealing outdated laws such as the “buggery” laws, which criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. In 2018, Justice Devindra Rampersad declared these laws unconstitutional in a landmark case, yet legislative follow-through has been slow, leaving legal loopholes that perpetuate inequality.
Moreover, there is an urgent need for the development of an inclusive education curriculum that promotes understanding and acceptance. By integrating LGBTQ education, we can foster a culture of inclusion and respect from a young age, dismantling prejudices before they can take hold.
We urge the government of Trinidad and Tobago to enact comprehensive anti-discrimination laws that include sexual orientation and gender identity. We also advocate for the establishment of national educational programs that promote LGBTQ inclusivity and awareness. These steps will move the nation closer to an equitable society where everyone is afforded the same rights and protection under the law.
