The Issue

When I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), I felt lost and unsupported. Navigating the healthcare system was a daunting task where information and resources were glaringly absent. Every step of my journey—from hospital admissions to waiting for neurologist appointments—was plagued with uncertainty because I had no easy access to detailed information or support resources specific to FND. Hospitals, emergency departments, clinics, and even the pharmacies lacked any materials that could help me or my caregivers understand what I was facing. The absence of this vital information meant continuous challenges not only for my own understanding but also for those around me who wished to offer support.

The reality is that FND is a little-known disorder that impacts countless lives, yet awareness remains minimal across healthcare and community sectors. National and community groups have been commendably active in raising awareness, but this information must be readily available at points of direct interaction with healthcare services, such as hospitals, emergency services, and clinics.

I am calling for the introduction of purse-sized, expandable information packs on FND to be distributed at these healthcare institutions. These packs should include information support, emergency contact numbers, and mental health support details that can be accessed instantly. Such resources should also extend into workplaces, allowing HR departments and First Aiders to make informed decisions and offer appropriate support to those affected.

Statistics show that FND is among the most common reasons for neurological referrals, yet the support and information available are insufficient. By integrating these information packs into NHS services, to support them as much as us we can bridge the awareness gap, fostering understanding and better support for both patients and caregivers from the moment of diagnosis.

By signing this petition, you will be supporting the push for better resources, better understanding, and better care for people with FND. Let us enable healthcare professionals and employers alike to assist more effectively by ensuring they have the tools and information at their fingertips, thereby improving the quality of life for those impacted by Functional Neurological Disorder. Sign this petition to advocate for essential change today.
