The Issue

Five years ago, Dorika D. was invited to come to the United States from the Democratic Republic of Congo to receive immediate and comprehensive life-saving medical attention. Since then, she has been living at Hunter Hollow nursing facility, where she receives round-the-clock care. Since tides of funding and elegibilty for Medicaid now differ from what they were when she arrived in the country, we citizens find ourselves at a critical juncture advocating to ensure Dorika can remain where she receives the required level of skilled nursing care, without jeopardizing her health and well-being.

Dorika arrived in the U.S. seeking refuge from dire circumstances and has since been dependent on the specialized medical services provided at her current skilled nursing facility. She is bedridden, and the continuity of care she receives at Hunter Hollow is vital for her survival. Any disruption or relocation to a facility that does not offer the same level of specific care could have irreversible adverse effects on her health.

The United States has always been a beacon of hope and refuge for those in dire need, providing opportunities for a dignified life irrespective of changing administrations or political landscapes. Dorika’s re-located to the U.S. under the promise of receiving life-preserving care for her severe health conditions. and we must ensure that she does not wind up discharged to a life on the streets, to a homeless shelter, or even to a lower level of care facility. In none of these outcomes would she survive. Dorika's life was in danger in Congo, and that's why she relocated to the United States. Her survival depends on her continuing to receive round the clock care at Hunter Hollow or be discharged only to a skilled nursing center of equal level of care .

Despite the change in government policies and guidelines over the years, Dorika’s need for skilled medical attention remains constant. Transitioning Dorika from her current residence to a facility that may not meet her healthcare needs is unacceptable. We must call on the relevant authorities, healthcare administrators, and elected officials to ensure that Dorika receives the equivalent level of care she depends on daily.

We urge you to sign this petition to advocate for Dorika D. to remain at a facility that provides the specialized care essential to her life.  Please sign the petition and help us ensure that Dorika continues to receive the life-saving care she desperately needs.
