The Issue

My name is Nia Holland, and I am reaching out today as a domestic violence survivor, mental-health advocate, and concerned member of the Ohio community. Having experienced and navigated the court system as a survivor myself, I feel compelled to speak up for those who remain unheard and unprotected by our current laws. This issue is deeply personal, not only for me but for countless others in our state who have encountered similar struggles.

Domestic violence is a grave issue affecting thousands of people across Ohio every year. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly one in three women and one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. Despite these alarming statistics, many survivors encounter barriers when seeking justice and protection. The current legal framework does not adequately support survivor rights, leaving them vulnerable and without sufficient recourse.

Ohio must make legislative changes to better safeguard those experiencing domestic violence. This includes implementing stricter penalties for offenders, creating more comprehensive support systems for survivors, and ensuring that law enforcement and court officials are trained to handle these cases with the sensitivity and urgency they require.

Our state can take inspiration from effective measures adopted elsewhere. For instance, in Connecticut, the introduction of a comprehensive network of domestic violence intervention and prevention programs has drastically lowered incidents and improved survivor outcomes. Ohio owes it to its residents to enact similarly transformative laws and policies.

We must also invest in community education programs to raise awareness about domestic violence and reduce stigma, making it easier for survivors to come forward and seek help without fear of judgment or retribution. These programs should include support from mental health professionals to provide holistic care to victims as they navigate the aftermath of abuse.

Please join me in urging Ohio lawmakers to review and strengthen our domestic violence laws. By signing this petition, you will stand alongside those who have suffered in silence, advocating for a safer and more supportive legal environment that prioritizes survivor rights and dignity. Together, we can foster hope for a future where survivors are truly protected and empowered.
