Advocate for Approval of the American Freedmen Business Initiative in Athens, Georgia

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Athens, Georgia, and concerned citizens, call upon the Mayor and Commission, the Human Relations Commission, and the People and Belonging Department to support and approve the American Freedmen Business Initiative (AFBI) ordinance.

Why is this important:
Over many generations, American Freedmen have significantly contributed to the vibrant tapestry of Athens, Georgia. Our community thrives through their economic, social, and cultural engagement. Nevertheless, this vital group continually confronts systemic barriers impeding their economic equality. One key barrier includes limited access to capital, mentorship, and entrepreneurial opportunities that foster community growth and development. Blanket terms like "minority" and "BIPOC" often fail to adequately represent the distinct challenges faced by American Freedmen, and consequently, the unique needs of this community stay ignored. It's necessary to acknowledge and tackle these particular barriers to ensure economic parity.

Therefore, we call upon the Mayor and Commission, the Human Relations Commission, and the People and Belonging Department to approve and back the American Freedmen Business Initiative (AFBI) ordinance. By supporting this vital ordinance, our community can provide sustainable solutions addressing economic disparities faced by American Freedmen in Athens, Georgia. In solidarity, let our shared commitment create an environment of fairness and prosperity for all. Please add your voice to this essential cause: sign this petition today.

What does the AFBI aim to achieve?
1. Business Incubation and Acceleration Programs: To support the development and growth of American Freedmen-owned businesses.

2. Access to Capital: Facilitating grants, low-interest loans, and micro-financing for American Freedmen entrepreneurs.

3. Training Programs: Offering education on business planning, management, marketing, and financial literacy.

4. Networking Opportunities: Connecting American Freedmen entrepreneurs with potential clients, investors, and partners.

5. Policy Advocacy: Promoting policies that ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for American Freedmen-owned businesses.

Call to Action: We urge the Mayor and Commission, the Human Relations Commission, and the People and Belonging Department of Athens, Georgia, to:

1. Approve the AFBI ordinance to provide the necessary legal framework and resources for its implementation.

2. Allocate an initial budget to support the various components of the AFBI.

3. Ensure the establishment of a steering committee comprising representatives from local government, American Freedmen community leaders, business professionals, and other relevant stakeholders to oversee the initiative.

By signing this petition, we affirm our support for the American Freedmen Business Initiative and urge our local government to take action to promote economic justice and empowerment for American Freedmen in Athens.
