The new proposal for the Hopewell Area School District building designated for grades K through six is currently slated to include only one gymnasium. This plan effectively reduces the district's total number of usable gyms from four to three. This decrease is concerning given the existing struggle to secure adequate time for various programs and activities including sports, music, and cheerleading.

One less gymnasium would make an already difficult situation almost impossible. Extracurricular activities are an essential component of a well-rounded education, contributing significantly to the physical, mental, and social development of our students. By reducing the number of available gymnasiums, the school district risks limiting opportunities for young people to engage in these valuable programs.

Hopewell's community is vibrant, and the youth deserve to have access to facilities that support their needs and aspirations. The decision to cut back on such crucial infrastructure would not only hinder the development of existing programs but may also restrict the potential for new initiatives that foster growth and teamwork among students.

It is imperative that the school board considers the long-term impact of their decision on the community and the school district’s ability to accommodate a diverse range of activities. An additional gymnasium in the proposed K-6 building would not only alleviate scheduling conflicts but also demonstrate a commitment to nurturing the potential of each student to grow.
