The Issue

Traveling should be an exciting adventure and a restful escape, yet for some it remains a distant dream due to a lack of basic accessibility accommodations in hotels. As the primary caregiver for my mother, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by those with mobility challenges. My mother, in her aging years, has been unable to enjoy the simple pleasure of an overnight hotel stay because most beds are elevated too high for her to access easily. This is not just her story but a predicament shared by many.

Take my friend, for example, who is wheelchair-bound and requires an adjustable bed to maintain her independence. Sadly, her dreams of travel and exploration are consistently interrupted by an oversight in the hospitality industry: the absence of standardized, accessible bedding. She—and countless others—deserve better.

Accessible properties should not be a luxury; they must become a standard. According to the World Health Organization, 15% of the global population lives with some form of disability, making accessibility a critical component of inclusive hospitality. Accessible beds can be a simple yet profound solution to bridge this gap. We propose the hospitality industry adopts adjustable and accessible beds as a standard feature. This solution is not only feasible but also economically viable, as it opens doors to a broader guest demographic.

To achieve this goal, we urge hotel chains and hospitality industry leaders to take decisive steps toward inclusivity. This might involve retrofitting existing accommodations and ensuring that new ones are built with accessibility in mind. Furthermore, industry-wide collaborations with mobility experts can offer hospitality businesses unique insights and innovative solutions.

Let us ensure that travel is truly the universal right it ought to be, free from the barriers hindering those with mobility challenges. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a thoughtful change in the hospitality sector to cater better to everyone’s needs. Let's create an inclusive world for the adventurers among us, starting with a good night's sleep. Sign this petition to support accessible travel for all.
