The Issue

Biking through the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland should be a joyful experience.  The danger deters many people from using this environmentally-friendly mode of transportation that could significantly improve our community.

A recent survey by the Government of Canada showed that a significant number of people would consider biking for their commute if they felt safer on the roads. Cities across the globe have demonstrated that investing in bike lanes leads to increased safety, reduced traffic congestion, and even boosts the local economy by making areas more accessible.

Consider Toronto, whose extensive cycling network has contributed to a decline in car traffic and a safer environment for both cyclists and motorists. They have made substantial investments in cycling infrastructure, yet they see consistent advocacy from the community for more changes. We need to use such successful examples as models for improvement in St. John's.

By implementing more bike lanes, we not only protect the cyclists but also promote healthier lifestyles, reduce our carbon footprint, and make St. John's a more attractive and vibrant community. Let's not wait for a tragedy to prompt change.

Join me in urging local decision-makers in St. John's to commit to developing a comprehensive network of bike lanes. Sign this petition to demand safer streets for everyone in our community. Together, we can transform St. John's into a city where cycling is safe, enjoyable, and accessible for all.
