Although there has been some silence on the air waves, a lot has been happening!
On Aug. 9th, the leadership of Sonora Regional Medical Center--an Adventist Health affiliate in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties--made a public presentation in which they explained that SRMC will play NO PART in assisted suicide. SRMC doctors, most of whom are independent contractors, will be prohibited from providing prescriptions for lethal drugs. And SRMC pharmacies will not dispense such drugs. Going even further, SRMC prohibits anyone else from participating in assisted suicide while in any of the 40+ facilities that they own or manage. This policy will preclude any outside person from assisting with a suicide while a patient is in the hospital or in one of their two long-term care facilities. The presenters emphasized that Sonora Regional Medical Center strives to create a culture that respects the sanctity of all human life.
This is a huge step towards keeping SRMC patients safe from a dangerous practice, and it gives hope that Adventist Health as a whole will publicly outline similar restrictions that will apply to all of its affiliates.
Please continue reaching out to the Adventist Health leadership to encourage the corporation as a whole to publicly clarify that their "non-participation" policy means opting out of assisted suicide to the FULLEST EXTENT the End of Life Option Act allows. Contacting the leadership of your local Adventist Health affiliate is a good idea, or you may contact the Adventist Health president:
