Adopt the Idaho Stop Law for cyclists in Alabama
The Issue
As a cycling enthusiast in Alabama and the President of the Birmingham Bicycle Club, I am deeply concerned about the safety of cyclists in our state. Alabama is currently rated as the 46th worst state for cycling infrastructure and ensuring cyclist safety. In 2025 alone, 16 cyclists lost their lives due to distracted driving. These tragic accidents highlight the urgent need for better laws and protections for those of us who choose cycling as a mode of transportation and recreation.
A practical and proven solution to enhance cyclist safety is the adoption of the Idaho Stop Law. This law allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs, empowering them to maintain better control and situational awareness while reducing the risk of collision with larger vehicles. By adopting this law, Alabama can help protect the lives of cyclists and foster a safer, more bicycle-friendly environment.
The Idaho Stop Law has already been successfully implemented in several states, (14 to be exact), resulting in decreased accident rates and improved safety for cyclists. South Carolina just recently passed it in 2026. It is time for Alabama to join this movement and prioritize the safety of its cyclists. Enabling cyclists to make safe and efficient decisions at intersections can significantly reduce the dangers they face on the road.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a crucial change that could save lives and promote healthier, more sustainable transportation options in Alabama. Let us work together to urge our lawmakers to adopt the Idaho Stop Law and help make Alabama a leader in cyclist safety. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference. Together, we can create safer roads for everyone.
