The Issue

Gun violence has transformed into a multi-million dollar business, driven by those with political and financial power who control the narrative and establish the rules of what gun violence prevention is and how it should be conducted. Unfortunately, they have redefined prevention to be reactionary, rather than proactive, leading to a societal failure to address the core issues that lead individuals to pick up a gun in the first place.

In Harvey, IL like many other places across the United States, communities are suffering from the devastating effects of gun violence. Families are torn apart, communities are living in fear, and lives are tragically cut short. The immediate, direct consequences are undeniably traumatic, but the ripple effects on mental health, economic stability, and societal cohesion are equally damaging and enduring.

We believe that real gun violence prevention must concentrate on identifying and tackling the root causes of gun violence. By addressing these foundational issues, we can prevent individuals from resorting to gun violence. To do this, we need to implement comprehensive education, mental health support, community building programs, and create economic opportunities, especially in communities most impacted by violence.

District 205 Schools have the power to be at the forefront of this change. By adopting programs that focus on the root causes of violence, District 205 Schools can transform narratives and provide students with pathways towards hope, resilience, and productive futures. Initiatives such as conflict resolution training, emotional and psychological support services, and mentorship programs can all be incorporated into school curriculums.

Moreover, these programs should be culturally responsive and tailored to the unique needs of each community, taking into account the socio-economic realities and pressures that contribute to violence. By prioritizing prevention through understanding and intervention, public schools can set a precedent for school districts nationwide.

We urge District 205 Schools to take immediate action and lead by example by implementing effective, root-cause gun violence prevention programs. Let us invest in our children's futures and empower them with the tools they need to thrive peacefully.

Join us in this critical mission and help reshape the future of our communities. Sign this petition to demand that District 205 Schools adopt these vital programs now.
