Adopt an Animal-Friendly Approach to Reduce Human-Elephant Conflict in Chitwan,Nepal
The Issue
To: The Government of Nepal, The Ministry of Forests and Environment, The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens and supporters of wildlife conservation who believe in the importance of reducing human-elephant conflict in Nepal. Elephants are an integral part of the ecosystem and are considered a national treasure in Nepal. However, the growing human population and loss of natural habitats have led to an increase in the number of incidents involving human-elephant conflict.
We respectfully request the government of Nepal to adopt an animal-friendly approach to reduce human-elephant conflict. This approach should focus on non-violent methods such as:
- Increasing public awareness about the importance of elephants and the need to protect them.
- Implementing measures to protect crops and property, such as electric fences and early warning systems.
- Providing compensation to farmers who suffer crop damage or loss due to elephant attacks.
- Creating and protecting elephant corridors that will allow elephants to move freely between habitats without coming into conflict with humans.
- Establishing and enforcing laws to prohibit keeping elephants for the entertainment industry or illegal trade.
- Promoting coexistence and tolerance between humans and elephants by encouraging a dialogue between local communities and the government.
We believe that this animal-friendly approach will help to reduce human-elephant conflict, protect both humans and elephants, and ensure the survival of this magnificent species for generations to come.
Sincere
