Save Our Jefferson Avenue Footbridge by supporting a complete restoration.

The Issue

Since 1902, the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge has connected Historic Commercial Street to neighborhoods to the north. For over a century it has been a safe way to cross 13 sets of railroad tracks, a focal point for local events, a repository of memories of generations who have used it regularily and those continue to do so. It is a popular destination for trainspotters from all over the world; open 24 hours a day and lit at night, it's a photographers' dream backdrop for kids, families, seniors and the young couples who are wed in the popular venues on C-Street. At 562 feet, it is one of the longest footbridges still in use in the United States over active railroad tracks, a unique and beautiful structure locals refer to as Springfield's Eiffel Tower and it's largest piece of public art. The 4 scenarios under consideration range from total demolition to complete restoration. We seek your support in order to convince our City Council to choose a complete restoration.
