The issue

There are many reasons why people would love to join the New Zealand Police Force, its driven by a deep passion to serve and protect our communities. However, many candidates' dreams were halted when they failed the initial psychometric test. The mandatory stand down period before I can retake the test feels discouragingly long, forcing me—and many others—to consider alternative career paths.

The New Zealand Police Force requires candidates to pass a psychometric test encompassing verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract reasoning. While these tests are essential to ensure suitable recruitment, the extended stand down period for retaking the test is not only frustrating but also counterproductive. Many aspiring police officers like myself are deterred because of this lengthy wait. It results in a diminished pool of candidates and potentially affects the caliber of recruits entering the force.

We currently face a shortage of policemen and policewomen, and retaining interested candidates is crucial. Reducing the waiting period would encourage more individuals to pursue their ambition and subsequently contribute to a better-staffed and more effective police service.

Numerous police forces globally offer more flexible retake policies, which has proven to enrich their recruitment processes. Adopting a similar approach can significantly improve our recruitment outcomes. This change has the potential to strengthen our police force and enhance our community security.

I urge the New Zealand Police to reconsider and reduce the stand down period for the psychometric test, making it more feasible for passionate candidates to fulfill their aspirations. Let's ensure that more dedicated individuals can join the force, making our communities safer.
