Today, I was walking to my French class when the principal stopped me and told me that I was in violation of the school dress code. As a student with a high GPA and a clean disciplinary record, this was a shocking and humiliating experience. Before transferring to Independence High School from Camelback High School, I never had to deal with dress codes, nor did they affect my or anyone else's learning experience. Now, I am forced to grapple with rules that feel arbitrary and are rooted in outdated notions.

The current dress code at Independence High School and within the Glendale Union High School District seems to disproportionately target girls, promoting a culture that shames young women and enforces outdated gender norms. Research indicates that strict school dress codes often lead to the policing of girls' bodies, which can contribute to a harmful school environment. It propels the message that female students are distractions, rather than individuals deserving respect and equality.

A more lenient and understanding dress code would not only empower students by respecting their choices but also foster a more inclusive school atmosphere. We need to address these systemic biases and recognize that education should not be influenced by what one wears, but rather by the respect and knowledge shared within the classroom.

I urge the administrators of Independence High School and the Glendale Union High School District to reconsider and revise their dress code policies. Let's work towards creating an equitable education environment that values all students based on their character and academic contributions, rather than their attire.
