Adjust the brightness of our neighborhood streetlights
The Issue
In our small, serene neighborhood, the nights should be a time of peace and relaxation. Sitting out on our porches or patios in the evenings is one of the great joys of life. Having a coctail or a warm mug of tea or hot cocoa having conversations with neighbors and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and tranquil skies and gaze up at the stars, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the night sky. However, the lights that were selected for this development have completely ruined and disrupted this cherished experience. The overly bright streetlights not only affect our ability to enjoy the simple pleasure of stargazing, but they're also having a detrimental impact on local wildlife. You literaley cannot sit out on the front porch with the blinding lights. The lights are so bright most everyone has to have room darkening shades shut tight to help prevent much the light from overtaking the atmosphere of even the inside of our homes. The question is why do we have lights so bright that our neighborhood is lit up like a Walmart parking lot.
The excessive brightness disrupts the natural behaviors of nocturnal animals. Birds, for instance, become disoriented, struggling to navigate the sky. Insects, which are essential for pollination, are drawn away from vital ecosystems, leading to a cascade of effects that impacts the entire neighborhood. According to a study published by the National Audubon Society, artificial lights are a leading cause of bird mortality during migration seasons, causing over 100 million bird deaths annually in North America alone.
Moreover, these bright lights contribute to light pollution, a growing problem in urban areas worldwide. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, light pollution increases energy consumption, disrupts ecosystems, and negatively impacts human health—interfering with our natural sleep patterns and diminishing the quality of life.
We propose a solution that balances safety with quality of life: replacing the current fixtures with less intense, LED streetlights that minimize light spillage and use proper shielding to direct light downward, rather than outwards. Many cities, such as Tucson, Arizona, have successfully reduced light pollution and saved energy using these methods, proving this is an actionable and realistic solution. Most other coastal areas have changed over the years to have proper lighting for a more relaxing atmosphere and to be considerate to wildlife.
By signing this petition, you will help convince our neighborhood council to invest in sustainable street lighting solutions. Together, we can bring back the peace and tranquility of our nights, protect the environment, and once again marvel at the stars overhead. Let's create a future where both people and wildlife thrive. Please, sign this petition now and join us in making a vital change for our community. Thank you for your support.
