Adjust start times for Stratford Preparatory Schools in California
The Issue
Hi everyone! I’m writing this because every morning when I wake up for school at 8 am, I feel incredibly sleepy and not ready to start the day. But here’s the thing: by 9 am, I feel much more refreshed and ready to learn. I believe that many of my peers at Stratford Preparatory Schools, especially those between the ages of 11 and 14, feel the same way.
Research has shown that starting school later in the morning can significantly improve students' learning experience, overall well-being, and even their academic performance. According to a study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, adolescents have a natural sleep-wake cycle that makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 pm and wake up early. As a result, many middle and high school students end up sleep-deprived, which can lead to a decrease in motivation and attentiveness in class.
By adjusting the school start time to 9 am and shifting the end time to 3:30 pm, we can create an environment where students are more alert and engaged. This also aligns with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which advocate for later school start times to help students achieve better health and academic outcomes.
Moreover, numerous schools across the United States that have adopted later start times have reported improved student attendance and a reduction in tardiness. For example, a school district in Seattle reported a significant increase in students' grades and attendance rates after changing their start time to 8:45 am.
Changing the start and end times at Stratford Preparatory Schools is a realistic adjustment that can have a substantial positive impact on the students' lives and learning success. It’s vital that we advocate for a change in the school timetable that genuinely benefits students' health and maximizes their education.
Please join me in supporting this initiative by signing this petition to adjust the school hours for Stratford Preparatory Schools in California. Let's help ensure a healthier and more productive school environment for all students.
