The Issue

Many of my friends and I experience similar struggles every morning. We awake as early as 6 a.m., hardly having enough time to get a proper night's sleep. By the time we reach school, the fatigue clouds over any enthusiasm we may have had for the learning day ahead. When exhaustion takes over and we accidentally fall asleep in class, rather than understanding, some teachers reprimand us, sometimes even using rulers slapped on desks or screaming out their name in front of everyone, causing emotional stress and creating a fear-driven environment. This not only damages our academic confidence but also contributes to emotional and psychological distress.

There is substantial scientific evidence supporting the need for a change. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, adolescents require between 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, yet the majority of high school students average 5 to 7 hours. A study published in 2014 in the journal 'Pediatrics' found that schools starting at 8:30 a.m. or later enable students to achieve better health, improved grades, and a more positive school atmosphere due to increased hours of sleep.

In Hilliard, OH, we are calling on our school district to consider the evidence and adjust school starting times to respect the sleep needs of students. By shifting the start time to 8:30 a.m. or later, we can foster a healthier and more conducive learning environment for students, ultimately improving academic performance and well-being.

We see no reason why Hilliard School District cannot follow the lead of many progressive districts around the country that have already embraced later start times, acknowledging the importance of sleep and student health.

We request every member of our community, including parents, teachers, and concerned citizens, to support this initiative and to urge the school board to make this critical change. By signing this petition, you are standing up for the health and academic success of our students in Hilliard, OH. Let's work together for a brighter, more focused future.
