The disparity between the Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA) for Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) recipients is an ongoing issue that affects the financial well-being of many federal retirees. 

Presently, CSRS annuitants receive full COLA increases, reflecting the actual rise in living expenses. In contrast, FERS retirees receive reduced COLA adjustments, which do not keep pace with inflation. This discrepancy places FERS retirees at a significant financial disadvantage over time, as their purchasing power diminishes.

Although FERS employees had the advantage of contributing to the TSP, this does not mitigate the impact of inadequate COLA adjustments since  many CSRS also had the privilege of contributing to TSP too.  COLAs barely keep up with true cost of living and close to a percent less is difficult for FERS retirees.  Retirement funds are most beneficial when they can maintain the retiree's standard of living against the backdrop of inflation.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation rates have been rising steadily, making it crucial for all federal retirees to receive equitable COLA adjustments. Ensuring that all retirees can comfortably afford basic necessities is not only a matter of financial fairness but also of respect for the service they provided to the nation throughout their careers.

The solution is straightforward: amend the current policy to ensure that FERS retirees receive COLAs equivalent to those provided to CSRS retirees. This change would sustain the financial security of FERS retirees, maintaining fairness and equity in their retirement benefits.
