Addressing the Rental Crisis in Portsmouth: Fair Rents and Responsible Landlords

The Issue

As a 22-year-old student who has experienced firsthand the challenges of high rents and neglectful landlords, I am deeply concerned about the rental crisis in our city of Portsmouth, UK. I have been fortunate enough to find a place to rent at a fair price with caring landlords and property managers who prioritize both the property's maintenance and my welfare. However, I recognize that my situation is an exception rather than the norm.

It is disheartening to witness countless families, young individuals, and older generations struggling to secure affordable housing while facing exorbitant rents without receiving adequate care from their landlords. This petition aims to address these pressing issues by urging our local Members of Parliament (MPs) to engage in a discussion on rent prices and landlord maintenance of rental properties.

Portsmouth is home to over 200,000 residents (Office for National Statistics), many of whom are affected by this crisis. The average monthly rent for a two-bedroom property in our city currently stands at £1,100 (HomeLet Rental Index). This figure represents an increase of 4% compared to last year alone. Such steep rises make it increasingly difficult for individuals and families alike to afford suitable accommodation.

Moreover, numerous tenants face additional hardships due to negligent landlords who fail in their responsibility towards maintaining rental properties adequately. Instances of mold growth, leaking roofs or pipes, faulty electrical systems are far too common among rented accommodations across Portsmouth.

By signing this petition, we call upon our local MPs representing Portsmouth constituencies—Stephen Morgan (Portsmouth South) and Penny Mordaunt (Portsmouth North)—to initiate a discussion on these critical matters within Parliament:

1. Rent Prices: We urge MPs Morgan and Mordaunt to advocate for policies that promote fair rents within Portsmouth. By engaging with relevant stakeholders such as local councils or housing associations, we can work towards implementing rent controls or other measures that ensure affordable housing options for all residents.

2. Landlord Responsibilities: We request our MPs to push for stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms to hold landlords accountable for maintaining rental properties adequately. This includes regular inspections, prompt repairs, and addressing any health or safety concerns raised by tenants. To secure this i believe a landlord deposit would benefit both the landlord and the tenant.

By addressing these issues head-on, we can alleviate the burden faced by countless individuals and families in our community. It is crucial that our local MPs recognize the urgency of this matter and take proactive steps to bring about positive change.

Together, let us create a Portsmouth where fair rents are the norm, responsible landlords are celebrated, and every resident has access to safe and well-maintained rental accommodations. Sign this petition today to make your voice heard!
