Addressing Noise and Safety Concerns Due to Reckless Driving on Gooding Drive, Merrimac

The issue

We, the residents of Merrimac 4226, are deeply concerned about the ongoing issue of noise pollution and safety hazards caused by reckless driving and speeding vehicles along Gooding Drive. This issue extends from the corner of Jura Parade and Bourton Road (traffic lights) to the corner of Jondique Avenue and Ghilgai Road (traffic lights).

The continuous presence of hoon drivers and speeding vehicles poses a significant risk to the safety of our community, particularly to school children who use the nearby bus stops. We fear that without intervention, an incident caused by reckless driving could result in serious injury or even loss of life.

By signing this petition, residents of Merrimac demonstrate their shared concern and acknowledgment of this pressing issue. We urge our local council to take action to address this problem effectively. Potential measures include:

  • Implementing lower speed limits with enhanced enforcement.
  • Installing signage indicating the presence of speed cameras, ideally positioned between the traffic lights at the railway bridge or at both lights.
  • Exploring additional traffic calming measures to discourage reckless driving behaviour.
  • Implement speed or red light cameras to deter speeding and enforce traffic regulations effectively.
  • Adding road chicanes to the road.

This reduces speeding and enhances traffic calming: By introducing curves or bends, chicanes naturally slow down vehicles, promoting safer driving behaviours and creating a visually narrowed roadway that encourages caution and attentiveness from drivers.

Implementing such measures, ideally during the construction of the new railway station, would be beneficial for the safety of residents, especially as the new train station entry will be on Gooding Drive in Merrimac, this will increase traffic flow in the area. Allocating government funds toward these safety enhancements would contribute to a safer environment for both pedestrians and motorists.

By raising awareness through this petition, we aim to garner support from our community and compel our council to prioritise the safety and well-being of all residents and businesses along Gooding Drive. Together, let's work towards creating a quieter and, most importantly, safer environment for everyone in the Merrimac community.
