Recently, my school introduced new restrictions, making it nearly impossible for us, especially girls, to express ourselves. Overnight, without any notice, hair colors that many of us chose and spent money on have been banned. It's deeply unsettling that the administration chose to enforce this rule without providing adequate forewarning. If such changes were planned, they could have communicated them before the school year began.

The shock didn't stop there; leggings are now unacceptable unless fully covered. The guidelines state that our "butt must be covered," a rule which hasn't been made clear as to why it's necessary. These dress code policies seem to unfairly target girls, limiting our ability to dress comfortably and expressively, which is a fundamental aspect of our identity.

Moreover, there is also an issue with the school’s backpack policy, which feels both unfair and discriminatory. Students are mandated to use only mesh or see-through backpacks. This rule insinuates that students are not to be trusted, but contradictorily, teachers are provided with opaque bags. Why are teachers, who could pose potential risks, exempt from this policy? Safety, if it's a genuine concern, should apply equally to all faculty and students. No student should fear their educator's intentions, but the double standard adds to the feelings of distrust.

These policies do more than restrict; they send a message that our school does not treat its students as responsible young adults. Schools should aim to foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding, rather than one of mistrust and unfair limitations.

I urge the school administration to reconsider these new rules. We need a dialogue with students and parents to find a fair compromise that considers safety without compromising our personal expression and equality. Let's create policies promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all rather than imposing unjust rules that breed discontent.
