I'm writing this petition because I believe that the detention policy at Coeur d'Alene High School is unfair and needs immediate revision. I am a dedicated student with good grades, yet I have received more than five tardies this term, resulting in mandatory lunch detentions. This policy doesn't consider individual circumstances, such as a student's academic performance or external factors beyond their control.

Coeur d'Alene High School currently imposes a detention on students who have accrued five tardies, regardless of their grades in their first-period class or if their tardiness was due to reasons outside of their control, like parental responsibility. This blanket policy unfairly penalizes students who otherwise excel academically, disregarding the nuances of individual student situations.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, factors leading to student tardiness often include issues beyond their control, such as unreliable transportation, parental responsibilities, or emergencies. Schools should aim to support their students rather than penalize them for circumstances they cannot always manage.

Our proposal is to revise the current detention policy to allow for a more comprehensive review of a student's overall performance and the reasons behind their tardiness. Considerations should include academic achievements in their first-period class and a legitimate review of each tardy instance to determine the underlying causes. By doing so, Coeur d'Alene High School can remain consistent with its mission to support all areas of a student’s growth.
