The Issue

The Philippines is grappling with a waste management crisis. In 2020, it was reported that the country generates over 40,000 tons of garbage every day, with only 60% of it being collected and properly managed. The rest is left uncollected, ending up in rivers, oceans, and in the surrounding communities, endangering public health and the environment.

One contributing factor is the country's overreliance on single-use plastics. According to the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, the Philippines is the third largest contributor to ocean plastic pollution in the world. This is a situation that we can no longer ignore.

It's imperative for the government to implement stricter regulations on waste disposal and encourage the use of alternative eco-friendly materials. Initiatives like waste segregation and recycling must be more widely promoted and enforced. Furthermore, community-based solutions like incentivizing reduction at the source and expanding public awareness campaigns can help mitigate the growing problem.

We also call upon corporations to take responsibility by reducing packaging waste and investing in sustainable practices. By taking collective action now, we can protect our waterways and communities from the mounting menace of trash.
