The Issue

In Malta, the rising cost of rent is placing an unbearable strain on countless individuals and families. Many of us are finding it increasingly difficult to secure affordable housing, threatening not only our financial stability but also our sense of community and belonging. As residents of this beautiful island nation, we are witnessing a crisis that affects not just a few, but all of us – across every demographic and economic background.

The average rent for a modest apartment in Malta can consume more than half the average monthly salary, forcing many people into financial hardship or, even worse, into seeking alternatives outside the country. This reality is unsustainable and inequitable. As a community that values fairness and opportunity for all, we must address this critical issue urgently.

Governments in other regions have faced similar challenges and found solutions that could serve as models for Malta. For instance, implementing rent control measures has provided relief to tenants in some cities around the world by setting limits on annual rent increases. Additionally, increasing the supply of affordable housing through state-sponsored building projects can alleviate the pressure on the current housing market.

Moreover, establishing a tenant protection act could provide renters with the security they need, ensuring that landlords adhere to ethical and reasonable practices, rather than exploiting the high demand and limited supply. The government must step forward with a comprehensive housing policy that addresses both the immediate crisis and long-term sustainability so that everyone can have access to safe and affordable housing in Malta.

By signing this petition, you will join a movement to urge Maltese authorities to prioritize housing that is affordable and accessible to everyone. Support this cause to help create a Malta where housing justice is at the forefront of our society. We deserve to live in a community where everyone has the right to a safe and affordable place to call home. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard.
