Last night, a horrific incident occurred within our residence (Respublica Princeton Village) halls—a close friend of mine was subjected to a traumatic and violent assault. This is not an isolated case; just last year, several incidents of sexual assault were reported, yet it seems that adequate actions have not been taken to prevent such heinous acts from recurring. This petition calls upon ResPublica administrators to acknowledge the prevalence of rape and sexual assault on our campus and to implement immediate and effective safety measures.

Student accommodations should be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not places where students fear for their safety. Unfortunately, evidence suggests otherwise. According to national statistics, one in five women and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted while attending college, and studies show that these numbers are likely underreported due to the stigma and trauma associated with such experiences. This data paints a sobering picture of the reality on campuses nationwide, including ours.

To address this urgent issue, we propose a series of specific actions:

1. **Increased Security Presence:** Augment the number of security personnel patrolling residence halls, particularly during nighttime hours, to deter potential offenders.

2. **Enhanced Lighting and Surveillance:** Install more lighting and security cameras in and around residence halls and other vulnerable areas to ensure these spaces are safe and monitored.

3. **Comprehensive Education Programs:** Implement mandatory training for students and staff on consent, bystander intervention, and resources available for survivors of sexual assault.

4. **Improved Reporting Systems:** Create a more accessible and supportive reporting system that encourages victims to come forward without fear of reprisal or not being believed.

5. **Support Services for Survivors:** Increase funding and resources for counseling services and support groups tailored to the needs of sexual assault survivors.

Every student deserves to pursue their education freely and safely. We must make our voices heard and advocate for a college environment where such atrocities cannot continue to occur. By implementing these changes, we can work towards a safer campus where students are protected and respected.
