Address Reckless Speeding on Montauk and Merrick Road
The Issue
Living in Copiague, NY, I've had a firsthand experience of the reckless speeding on Montauk Highway and Merrick Road, which resulted in a personal accident. As a parent, my concerns are magnified, knowing that my children live and play in this community. The distressing incidents I've witnessed, including a tragic fatality, errant drivers flipped cars, and anti-social behavior due to drunk driving on these roads, are not just numbers but lives impacted forever.
Between Emerson Road and Bayview Avenue, Montauk Highway and Merrick Road have turned into hazardous zones with people speeding at 60mph any time of day or night. Our community, buzzing with both residential homes and commercial businesses, deserves to feel safe and secure. It's time to raise our voices and demand action from the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County Police Department, and local officials to take this crisis seriously.
The frequency of accidents—four in recent times, tragically resulting in at least one death—screams for immediate intervention. Reckless driving and speeding not only endanger lives but also impedes the sense of community and safety Copiague prides itself on. We need traffic safety measures like increased patrol units, speed cameras, and community awareness programs to deter reckless drivers.
Compelling data supports the urgent need for action. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities in 2019. This translates to approximately 30 deaths a day due to speeding on average across the United States. But we're not just another statistic. We are families, neighbors, and local businesses who thrive on a safe and peaceful environment.
Let’s not wait for another tragedy to strike. It is imperative that local authorities take responsible actions to ensure the safety of Copiague residents and visitors alike. Sign this petition to urge our leaders to implement effective traffic control measures. We demand change before another innocent life is lost due to preventable speeding accidents.
