I have lived in Baltimore for years now, and this city has always felt like home. However, in recent months, my neighborhood and others have become increasingly plagued by heinous acts of violence such as rape and assault. There are chilling allegations being whispered about, and too many voices remain unheard.
Despite numerous attempts to reach out to city officials, including Mayor Brandon Scott and other representatives, we have been met with silence. This lack of response from those who are supposed to serve and protect us only adds to the fear and frustration that we, the citizens, now feel. We simply cannot continue to live in a state of neglect.
Baltimore reported 348 rapes in 2022—a number that shouldn’t just be a statistic, but a powerful call to action. According to the Baltimore Police Department, there are many more cases that go unreported, reflecting a wider issue of distrust in the system. These rising incidents of rape and assault undermine our community's sense of safety and disrupt our everyday lives.
The goal of this petition is to press Mayor Brandon Scott and other city officials to engage immediately with the affected communities in Baltimore. We are demanding the implementation of a dedicated task force for handling these cases. This task force should not just focus on addressing the current backlog, but provide ongoing support to survivors and engage in preventative measures to curb future attacks.
