The Issue

In 2026 New York City saw a climb of hate crime and hate speech that has never been seen before, targeting groups based on ethnicity, religion, where they are from, sexual orientation, LGBTQ+, etc. Currently for the past few years antisemitism has been the most targeted group, taking a significant rise since mid 2024.

According to the NYPD, 143 hate crime cases were recorded in 2026, comparing with 128 cases during the same window in 2025.
Also according to the New York Post, Hate crimes have spiked by more than 70% in NYC last month, since last year, Which is a big rise.

In 2026 out of 143 cases 78 were confirmed antisemitic cases in only the first 3 months of 2026.
But antisemitism wasn't the only group jumping, in 2026 Anti-Muslim cases jumped from 5 to 12 (140%) for the first time in NYC. Also during that period hate crime had risen 11.7%.

The NYPD had recorded hate crime cases in January of 2026 of incidents targeting Muslims, Asians, Jews , black individuals, and others. The NYPD had also recorded that anti semitic accounted for 57% of reported hate crimes although 10% of NYC residents are Jewish.

In New York Constantly many New Yorkers have experienced a hate crime which can be physical, either in school, in the subway, or on the streets. In New York City regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or beliefs, everyone has the right to feel safe to be who they are.

We call upon New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the NYC Council, and the NYPD to take action regarding these problems. This can include increasing Community programs that promote inclusivity and making people feel more safe.

Signing this petition helps to bring awareness to this problem with the hopes of making a New Yorker to feel safer on the streets and gets this situation out to the Council and the Mayor.

Thank You.
